A FUTURE VISION
As for now here you can find only a schematic view on the buildings and the place. As works advance I will be able to post more detailed images. The schemes below are developed by Varvara Valtchanova, an architect with extensive experience in renovation of old Rhodope houses.
The house is supposed to look like this:
Front (view from south)
View from east (left) and from west (right)
The barn will be transformed in a living place with a kitchen and bakery in the first floor and a creative workspace on the second.
Front cross-section (left) and cross-section from south-west (right)
I will continue with the crop rotation. I consider rasing beds and making a ditch. I also consider a more durable path covering solution (I use saw dust at the moment).
• FRUIT TREES
I wish to keep the existing trees and renew them. Where possible I want to plan new fruit trees suitable for the place.
I like the place as it is now — covered with flowers and herbs. I help a little with the scythe as does my neighbours donkey with its teeth.
Most of the work is still in front. Only the most pending activities are described below. I will continue based on the available time and means.
• Water catchment and management: Construction of a water tank (most probably an underground one or at least covered). Construction of ponds for irrigation purposes and for grey water management. Construction of drainage systems around the house and the barn.
• Irrigation: Calculation of the irrigation needs. Construction of ditches.
• Land reclamation: Construction of terraces and paths. Slope stabilisation.
• For when nature calls…: Imperative before starting any work on site is to plan and construct a place for relieving someone’s natural functions.to be used temporarily until the corresponding places are built in the house. Help for developing and nature and nose friendly solution is much appreciated!
Plenty of work here. Let’s start with cleaning it and preparing for the renovation. The roof replacement and the construction of a drainage seem to be the most pending works here.
Cleaning the ground floor. Digging a draining channel around. New roof construction.
Continue the crop rotation. Improvement of the currently applied. A more durable path marking and cover.
FRUIT TREE WORKS
Pruning, grafting. Studying the diseases and deficiencies on the apple and walnut trees. Finding the cause and curing.
The meadow requires the least intervention. Mowing with the scythe, work on the hedge – pruning and planting of new shrubs and trees.
