The mountain with soul. This is how Rhodope is known. Everyone will find something for her/himslef here. For me Rhodope is a magical mountain. This is my feeling when I am there.
Interesting places nearby (and somewhat further away):
Hot mineral springs. The village of Banite is situated 6 km away from Krastatitsa. There are hot mineral springs with healing water with excellent qualities. It is especially favourable for the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. There is a sanatorium at place, as well a s small SPA hotel. Everyone can fill in water from the spring in the middle of the village. The water is very good for drinking too.
Winter sports. Downhill and cross country skiing possible in Pamporovo – about an hour driving by car, and in Chepelare – some 1,2 hours away by car.
By bike. For those who’d like to discover the mountain by bike there is a marked path to the neighbouring village of Starnitsa. It is only one of the numerous possibilities to explore the surroundings by mountain bike. The asphalt road along the valley of Malka Arda provides good conditions for trips by road bikes.
Day trips and hiking. Endless day trip and hiking possibilities in nearby and the further surroundings. The Devil’s bridge near Ardino, the Trigrad gordge, Smolyan lakes, Yagodinska cave, Uhlovitsa cave near Mogilitsa, the rock phenomenon Wonder bridges, the Krastova gora (Crosses mountain – a sacred place with numerous chapels), Belintash, Asenova fortress are just some of them.
The sea… Aegean (or White sea – Byalo more in Bulgarian) sea (to the left) is at about 3 hours driving by car. The Black sea coast (pictures in the middle and to the right) is at about 4 hours driving.
Armed… with a camera! Excellent possibilities for watching and photographing of wild animals.
The animal kingdom is majestic and very diverse. Rhodope mountain is the realm of the brown bear. There is also row and red deer, wild boar, wolf and many other representatives of the mammals.
The world of birds is very diverse too. In the Easter Rhodope, some 2,5 hours away, is the town of Madzharovo, where one can observe several vulture species. The Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds has built and operates a visitors centre there.
And the mountain meadows are covered with aromatic herbs and flowers, many of which can be seen only here. Thousands of bees, butterflies and other onsects flye among them.
Folklore and crafts. The interested in local folklore and crafts have rich possibilities at hand. They can visit the woodcraft workshop of craftsman Mincho Mincho in Mogilitsa, go to the bagpipe contest in Gela, visit Shiroka luka… or come to „Do Izvora“ in Krastatitsa and create something themselves!
