Krastatitsa is a village in Smolyan region. It is situated between 1000 and 1200 meters above sea level on a south facing slope in the central part of Rhodope mountain above the valley of Malka Arda river.
The village is 260 km away from the Bulgarian capital Sofia and some 470 km away from Varna. I found out that distance is very relative in the mountain and the time for travelling means much more, therefore by car – from Sofia 4 hours, and 7 from Varna respectively. Plovdiv is some 120 away at about 2 and a half hours driving distance.. The regionl center – the town of Smolyan – is 50 km away at about an hour driving distance. The town of Kardzhali is 67 km away at about on and a half hour driving distance.
Currently there are some 30 permanent residents in Krastatitsa. There are two neighbourhoods. The place I take care of is situated in the Vrisova neighbourhood, also known as Vrisishte. The name comes from the local word for „spring“ which is vris.
There is only one cow left in the village currently. The number of goats are growing – they are easier to take care off by the elderly people in the village. There are a number of horses, donkeys, chicken, and two bee hives.
The Erendzhikov’s house is situated in the upper neighbourhood. There you will be warmly welcomed by Nadia, who renovated the old Rhodopean house by herself. Home made meals with local products grown in her garden and friendliness is what you can find there.
In Vrisishte we also have a guest house for just over a year now – the Kassabova house. Just two houses away from my place my neighbour Asen Kassabov and his wife will receive you with joy in their freshly renovated house with a wonderful view on the valley of Malka Arda river.
In the surroudings of the village there is a bear that is only occasionally seen in the village. It prefers to stay away from people, just how it is supposed to be with a decent local bear!
